Method Description:
|
-
Total C02 Data:
-
TCO2 Analysis Method:
The analysis was done by coulometry with two analytical systems (AOML-1 and AOML-2) used simultaneously on the cruise. Each system consisted of a coulometer (UIC, Inc.) coupled with a SOMMA (Single Operator Multiparameter Metabolic Analyzer).
-
Standardization Technique:
-
Technique Description:
The coulometers were calibrated by injecting aliquots of pure CO2 (99.995%) by means of an 8-port valve outfitted with two sample loops that had been calibrated by Kelly Brown, CCN Consulting (Wilke, 1993)

Sample Volume:

Correction Magnitude:
The correction factor used for dilution was 1.00037
-
Batch Number:
59
-
CRM Analysis Info:
A correction was also applied for the offset from the Certified Reference Material (CRM) Batch 59, supplied by Dr. A. Dickson of Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO). This correction was applied for each cell using the CRM value obtained in the beginning of the cell.
-
Field Replicate Info:
Replicate seawater samples were taken from the surface, 1000 m, and bottom Niskin sample bottles and run at different times during the cell. No systematic biases were discerned and the average difference of the samples was 1.0 umol/kg for surface values; 1.2 umol/kg for duplicate samples at 1000 m and 1.4 umol/kg for duplicate samples near the bottom.

Analysis:
-
pCO2 Analysis Method:
The fugacity of CO2 was measured at a constant temperature of 20deg.C by equilibrating a 500-mL water aliquot in a volumetric flask with a closed headspace. The headspace is circulated through a non-dispersive infrared detector that measures both CO2 and H2O levels.

pH Scale:
Sea Water Scale
-
pH Analysis Method:
Seawater pH was measured using the spectrophotometric procedure (Byrne, 1987) and the indicator calibration of Clayton and Byrne (1993). The indicator was an 8.0-mM solution of m-cresol purple sodium salt (C21H17O5Na) in MilliQ water.
